Divinity Companion Relationships: What Larian Plans

Larian wants deeper relationships among companions as well as friendship and romance with the player. This overview covers how connections should grow from the characters and Adam Smith’s goal of greater emotional complexity.

Divinity aims to deepen relationships on two levels: between the player and companions, and among companions themselves. Kevin (u/Kevin_Larian) makes that distinction in the January AMA. Additional party dialogue alone is therefore not the full announced goal.

Friendship and Romance Grow From Characters

Writing Director Adam Smith explains that romances should emerge naturally from personality and relationships. Story development works alongside character art, acting and cinematic production. This describes a creative approach, without yet introducing particular partners or decision paths.

Smith also promises space to develop relationships. That does not identify a BG3-style camp with identical routines. He does say players will not need to refill spell slots, a concrete distinction from D&D’s system.

Relationships Should Include Difficult Emotions

Smith wants relationships to have greater emotional complexity, including less positive feelings. That extends the focus beyond which character can become a romantic partner: party members should also develop relationships with each other. The story-entry explainer explains the new adventure’s premise.
